Box Score Analysis; at Miami Heat: Miami Starters Dominate

Game #1: Heat Beat Knicks in Miami, 115-93

The game started off nicely, but by the end of the second half the Knicks were a mess. Where did it all fall off?

Well, a quick look at the box score shows that the Knicks just were unable to stop any of the Miami Heat starters.

The Miami Heat starters were a combined 36 of 57 from the field, not to mention 4 of 9 from behind the 3-point line. I know that the Miami Heat are a good team with a playoff caliber roster, but they aren’t the 90’s Bulls, there’s no way they should be putting up those kinds of numbers.

Jermaine O’Neal must have had flashbacks to 2004. He had 22 points on 10 of 12 shooting to go along with his 12 rebounds.

Michael Beasley showed no ill-effects of his arduous summer, coming out of the season opener with 21 points, 3 rebounds and 2 steals.

As for Miami’s superstar, Dwyane Wade, he shot 10 of 22 from the field for 26 points, 5 rebounds and 5 assists. He was the only Heat starter that did not shoot above 50% on the night.

As for the Knicks, clearly the defensive numbers weren’t there. They allowed their opponents to shoot 56.6% form the field and 46.7% from 3-point land. Those high percentages are the result of 42 easy points in the paint, which opened up great looks from behind the arc for the Heat.

The Knicks didn’t take care of the ball either, with 13 turnovers and 16 points off.

As for the Knicks offense, they just couldn’t buy a bucket. The Knicks shot just 37.9% from the field and made only 10 of their 39 3-point attempts. When you take away Danilo Gallinari’s 3-point shooting on the night (7 of 13), the Knicks were just 3 of 26 from 3-ponit land. You’re not going to win a lot of games doing that.

As for the individual numbers, they are all kind of padded given that this game got ugly early into the 3rd quarter. David Lee failed to register a double-double bud did have 22 points; of course, he was limited in minutes due to early foul trouble.

Knicks fans might be concerned that Wilson Chandler and Al Harrington combined to take 12 3-pointers—I just don’t know if that equates to winning basketball games for the Knicks.

Lastly, Coach D’Antoni didn’t use the bench much. Larry Hughes was a DNP-CD, and only Nate Robinson, Darko Milicic and Danilo Gallinari had more than 6 minutes off the bench. One has to wonder how confident Coach is in his bench, especially since this was a blowout game and he still barely managed to play Jordan Hill, Toney Douglas and Marcus Landry.
